Alan Bennett (Leeds, Anglaterra, 9 de maig de 1934) és un dramaturg, actor, novel·lista i guionista britànic, guanyador d'un Premi Tony per la seva obra The History Boys.
És autor de moltes obres teatrals com Habeas Corpus, Forty One Years On, Kafka's Dick o The Madness of George III' (adaptada després al cinema). També és conegut per la seva obra a la televisió i al cinema.
Alan Bennett és un dramaturg molt famós a Anglaterra, tant conegut per les seves obres de teatre com per les sèries de televisió que ha escrit. També ha fet d'actor i fa deu anys que escriu narrativa amb gran èxit al seu país. Amb Una lectora poc corrent va seduir lectors i crítica a casa nostra. Empúries li ha publicat també la primera novel·la,Amb una mà al davant i l'altra al darrere.

Smut. Two Unseemly Stories (2011) és el títol original d'aquest llibre que conté dos relats 'diferents' de l'escriptor -sobretot d'obres de teatre- Alan Bennett.

Podríem traduir Smut per obscenitats, en català, i unseemly pel que en castellà diríem indecorosas. Els nostres traductors han obviat la part obscena i han optat per un Indecències, en català publicat per Empúries, i Dos historias nada decentes, publicat per Anagrama en castellà. Res d'obscenitats.

Després de l'èxit aclaparador d'Una lectora poc corrent i Amb una mà al davant i l'altra al darrere, el mestre de l'humor britànic ens brinda dues petites històries curtes plenes d'humor que giren al voltant d'un erotisme molt inusual.

En el primer relat, la vídua senyora Donaldson troba la manera de guanyar-se uns diners extra com a «falsa pacient» en unes pràctiques d'hospital. La seva vida pren un caire encara més transgressor quan lloga una habitació a una parella d'estudiants que la introduiran en una nova visió del sexe.

El segon és la història d'una mare de mitjana edat, la senyora Forbes, que adora el seu fill Graham. Aquest mena una doble vida per evitar que la seva mare descobreixi la veritat. Però la situació es complica i el lector descobreix que ni en Graham, ni la seva dona Betty, ni el pare d'en Graham, no entenen els seus propis desitjos, i tampoc els de la senyora Forbes.
